Many people start out wanting to put together a small business, rise to a certain level of success, and then sell it for a lot of money. Frankly, the chances of doing that are slim.

It is far more rewarding, and more lucrative, to lay a firm foundation, focus on growing your business, and then let yourself enjoy the fact that it is also growing you. You are becoming a bigger person with each milestone you hit, with each person you empower, and with each day, you thrive as the owner of that company.

When you build something, you must have a blueprint.  A blueprint is a plan.   When you are building your business, you need a plan, too.  The first page in your Business Building Blueprint shows you the number of days that you plan to make money.  Whether or not you call it sales, revenue, production or cash in the drawer it is money.  You want to have lots of it.

How many days a week will you be open? Will you work Christmas? Weekends? How many hours a day will you work? When will you take vacation? If you are in the restaurant business, do you want to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner? If you are a Dentist, what is your schedule for continuing education? Put everything in your Calendar.  You can only make money if you’re open for business.  That doesn’t mean that you can’t take time off.  Plan for both.

Calendar One

When you have your calendar in place, you can then set a goal.  If you are a determined Business Builder, look at your goal from many perspectives.  Bounce your idea off someone close to you and your business.  This is good time to enroll the help of your coach.  Once you set your goal, dream about it, stare at it, live with it.  Once you feel good about your goal, set it in stone and strategize!

Calendar Four

Whether or not you are a new or seasoned business builder, you must have a Production Strategy. Once you know the number of days you plan to "produce" revenue and your Daily Goal, you can calculate your potential income.  Your Daily Goal multiplied by the number of days you plan to produce will give you the Monthly Goal.

Calendar Three

The next step is to figure out who is going to Build Your Business and produce that Daily Goal.  An example of how you could do that in a Dental Practice would be:
